The Rocket's Red Glare

The lovely pigweed plant is back after re-seeding itself. The other splashes of color are red and blue salvia and white petunia. This holiday scene comes together thanks to the pigweed which looks like fireworks exploding!

All of this independence day decor is from my stock. 

This little guy has aged quite a bit due to the sun. If you click here, you can see how young and brown he used to look. I think it's time to purchase a new centerpiece for these celebrations. He usually comes out for July 4th and Memorial Day.

Return of the Pigweed

The Mystery Plant from November that was identified in January (read previous post) as Amaranthus (aka Pigweed) has made a new appearance in my yard. I loved the look of it and seeded along my back fence line, hoping it would provide a full, beautiful way to block out my neighbor's yard. Well, here's an update.

None of the seeds that I planted took, despite all my efforts. However, you can see that the plant did bloom in an unconventional place; between the pavers of my nice seating area. So, I sacrificed my seating area so that these plants could take it over, only in the hopes of harvesting more seeds to try the fence line again. 

They've absolutely taken over this portion of my yard. See that fence back there? The original plant was in one of the cement blocks that isn't even in the picture (off to the left). I'm thankful that this is as far as they got, and really hope that my second attempt at the fence line will go better.

Mystery Plant: Solved!

The mystery has been solved thanks to Garden Answers on Facebook! Back in November I asked for help from My Fairy Folks to identify a Mystery Plant that suddenly sprouted in my yard around July. I was surprised at how large it had grown and that it was still going strong through December. 

The following definition is provided by Wikipedia.

Still full and happy, this plant has been identified as an amaranth and, according to Wikipedia is actually considered a weed! Well, it's the prettiest dang weed I've ever seen and despite the mean label it gets, I will treat it like the lovely plant I've come to know it as.
