...They Came In Droves

The "Super Bloom" this past month in Southern California attracted many crowds, at a point between 50k and 100k in one weekend alone. I heard stories of the traffic jams, cars parking on the side of the freeway and even people waiting hours to board shuttles that were provided for a fee. There is good reason for the crowds since the last bloom was in 2017 (before that was 2005). The city used that experience to plan for this year's crowd, but the bloom and the crowd were greater than they had anticipated.

Painted Lady butterflies migrated from Mexico to Oregon (or further), making it the farthest migrating butterfly. For over a week it was pointless to get a car wash since every trip on the freeway gained a few unfortunate splats on the windshield. Over 1 billion of these orange and black butterflies filled the skies, being the most in migration since 2005. This migration and Super Bloom go hand in hand.

New Faces and April's Contest

This container garden was created with $12 - a little pricey compared to what I've been creating recently, but it's nice to splurge once in a while. The farmer, Sweet Miah, his wife, Jessica, the goat, sheep and chicken (as well as a farm house not pictured here) were all part of a set that was $12. Everything else in this container is something I already had, including the plants.

Oh, and at the end of the video I talk about the new contest we're having starting April 1. I'm trying to get as many new YouTube subscribers as possible, so tell your friends and make sure they let us know (in YouTube comments) YOU sent them so you can get credit for it and possibly win a prize!

Local Happenings - Veggiepalooza!

On March 16 and 17, Veggipalooza attracted quite the crowd of "green thumbs" to browse nearly 300 home-garden friendly plants for sale. I managed to buy a few types of tomatoes and beans but it was a hard decision. I passed up Clint Eastwood's tomatoes but will hopefully try them next year. I'd also like to thank my best friend for accompanying me on this day trip.

New Life in the Garden - Coco

The newest addition to our garden is baby Coco, already with a health appetite. I found her gumming on some chard. I also discovered some colorful eggs in a nest which I'm interested to see what comes out of that.

Food Garden Friday - New and Resurfacing

Here's a bit of an update on my Food Garden. I still have some cleaning up to do but I wanted to show the Poppies that have reseeded that will help me establish my Food Forest, as well as the new plants I put in. And stick around til the end of the video when I reveal my new contest through YouTube.

Food Garden Friday - Rough Around the Edges

As I've said many times over the last few months, Southern California has received quite a bit of rain - much more than usual. This is absolutely wonderful for my garden but coupled with recovering from my surgery, I haven't been able to keep up with it!

Oh my, what a mess! There's so much over grown, dead and alive and so little time! However, now is the time I return to my garden. The dead things need to be removed, the live things need to be tamed and there needs to be some method to this madness!

The photos above are of the same area. The left is when I first created the area and planted so many lovely edible greens for salads back in January of 2018. The photo on the right shows what has died (they lived fulfilling lives) and also plants that reseeded themselves because I did not plant anything new in this area. As you can see, the swiss chard is thriving! I actually cooked up some of it for breakfast a few days ago and it was delicious - much better taste cooked than raw!

My plans for the food garden this year are to expand the area to include the many seeds I received from my Seed Bank Box subscription that weren't able to make it into the ground last year. I hope to share more of my home-made, home-grown recipes as well!

What are you planting in your garden this year? I'd love to hear about it.

My Fairy Folks - Springtime Palace

The following fairy house was created by Nick from Nevada. He's been making them for a few years and wanted to share this creation with the rest of My Fairy Folks.

This "Springtime Palace" was created for less than $10 using fake flowers, painted wood, gems and seashells.

The base was created from a Chinese checkers board from Goodwill and a silver painted wooden labyrinth found at a garage sale. What a lovely home that is sure to attract a happy fairy.

Bright White Planter

Repainting garden structures can not only make them stand out more, it can also stamp a little of your personality or agenda on it. No need to go out and buy new garden planters when my existing one just needs a fresh coat of paint!

In the Garden - Haul, February 2019

The following three container gardens were created using three of the new houses I got in my most recent Hobby Lobby haul. Other than the cost of the houses, I only used plants, containers and decor I already had in my inventory so these gardens were very low cost.

Hobby Lobby Haul - February 2019

I found four new fairy houses at Hobby Lobby. They have great sale prices that allowed me to pick up these four houses for just over $20!
I have quite a bit of catching up to do due to the rain and my surgery but I'm off to a good start now.

This first video is a walk through of how I turned recent gifts from Hawaii into new plants for my kitchen window.

I also received seeds for Bird of Paradise. I made sure to follow the instructions and I hope to transplant them as soon as they sprout.
