Plant and Decor Haul - October 2018

My most recent haul from Jo-Ann came out to around $40 total. I used a 20% off entire purchase coupon to add to my savings. Don't be ashamed to work those coupons!

All of this Fall harvest decor was on sale at 50% off.

This decorative yet simple pumpkin was on sale at 40% off.

A home for a gnome. This was the only item I purchased at regular price which allowed me to use a 50% off coupon.

This is my most recent Lowe's haul. Three strawberry plants were $3 each and the reason for this shopping trip. The rest of the haul was an impulse buy. I don't always know what I want to purchase prior to entering the doors - most of my decision is based on deals and sales (and the colors).

I picked up some yellow and red snapdragons for $1.38 each.

This Marigold came in a 4 pack at $2.49.

This is an Evening glow mirror plant, originally $16, purchased on super sale for $5. I plan to use it as a tree in one of my fairy gardens.

Gifts for the Garden - June 2018

Lets take a look at all the lovely gifts I received from My Fairy Folks this month!

This planter stand and the bench were given to me by one of my oldest followers. The tiny Garden Gnome book came from a new follower - hello and welcome! This DIY door was spotted by one of My Fairy Folks in Los Angeles during a shopping trip and it made her think of me. How wonderful to know that I'm in your thoughts when you're out and about! The trail sign and pen came from one of my granddaughters. The pen is great for taking notes on paper and my tablet since it has a soft tip for touch screens.

Garden A Day Challenge - Day 26, Canoe Race

Today's garden was a bit rushed but these two have a special treat. Today is Canoe Day according to the Days of the Year calendar and they each believe they are the best behind the oar.

Painting and Prepping for a New Look

I'd like to share with My Fairy Folks a story about how these two characters came to look so full of life.

In late 2017 I found this male fairy at Parkview Nursery in Riverside (this photo was pulled from a different post but shows the fairy best). Unfortunately his face was a little expressionless so I would try not to get too close in photos. A few months ago I came across a similar male fairy in a canoe at the same nursery and decided to purchase it. This wouldn't be the first time I've used two different figurines to play the role of the same character; I've also done this with some Disney character miniatures.

This gnome on a mushroom was gifted to me earlier this year by one of My Fairy Folks. I could tell that he was in need of a repaint. When I spotted a blue shirt, red hat gnome in a canoe recently, I knew this was a perfect opportunity for a canoe race scene. I had two characters that would be represented by four miniatures. But first, I needed to get new paint on the pieces.

In the few years I've been doing this fairy garden blog, I've been able to meet some very talented folks and am happy to call most of them My Fairy Folks. I reached out to one in particular who I was told does wonderful work with painting miniatures. I asked if she could add a face to my two leading characters and she was happy to help. When they were returned to me, I was very impressed with how they came out!

Not only did she add personality to their blank faces, but she also repainted texture and clothes so that each character truly looked like their match. While the boy fairy was a bit easier since they came from the same miniature designer, the gnome required a bit more effort and finesse. I'm so very grateful for her work and friendship. I am pleased to know that there are people out there that stand behind giving new life to old things.

My Fairy Folks: Gifts for the Garden

This gnome was gifted to me by a follower from Yucaipa, CA. It's no secret to readers that I enjoy mushrooms and keeping gnomes in my garden, so it is a great gift! Believe it or not, I already know what scene he'll be perfect in and it's pretty exciting to me.

These rocks were brought to me by my granddaughter. Her and her boyfriend traveled to Arizona recently and saw many beautiful rocks and shells and thought I might like to use them in my garden.

I recently rinsed them off to show off their beauty better. The array of colors is amazing.

The rocks have such unique shapes! The large, dark stone strongly resembles a heart. I also think the red stone to the right of it looks like a heart, but my other granddaughter thinks it looks like a chicken.

The stones arrived a few weeks short of being featured in this Valentine's Day garden. Isn't it amazing how much these violas have grown since then?

Here's a close up of the smaller, red heart stone. Or is it a chicken? What do you think this stone looks like? Let us know in the comments below.

My Fairy Folks: Mina and Willow

I recently got an email from one of My Fairy Folks that introduced me to some new friends and new traditions. This is Mina who's mother, Willow, graciously decided to share this moment with me, which I will now share with all of you (with her permission, of course).

Willow from Los Angeles, CA writes: "This is a tradition my mother began with me as a child for St. Patrick's Day. Now I am doing it with my child who has asked to include every major holiday dinner." So, this Thanksgiving, they filled a small plate with small portions of all the food they served to offer it to the fairies.

And here is where they left their food this year; in front of this statue that keeps an eye the offering.

Thank you, Mina and Willow, for sharing your fairy-related tradition! If any other Fairy Folks have traditions they'd like to share that involve fairies, gnomes, or any other mystical beings, please feel free to share them with me so I can share them here on the blog. My contact information is below.

My Fairy Folks: Arizona

Here are some photos from one of My Fairy Folks in Arizona.

This fairy garden proves that fairy gardens can thrive in any climate. This particular morning it was 89 degrees, but it is known to get well into the triple digits!

Many of these miniatures are handmade.

Here's a gnome, peeking through the greenery. Thank you so much for showing us this fairy garden. If you are a Fairy Folk and would like to share your fairy garden on my blog, feel free to contact me. I always love seeing all the other fairy gardens in the world.

The Gnomes From Woodland Grove, Part 2

One evening, the young gnomes Bobby and Sue were enjoying a bit of teeter-tottering (as they do most mornings, afternoons and evenings) in the front yard of their home in Woodland Grove. Grandma and Grandpa were inside getting dinner ready. The light breeze wafted the scents over to Bobby and Sue, making their tummies grumble but both had a smile on their face. Their father had just returned from chopping wood and began to work on getting a fire started.

Bobby and Sue play on the teeter totter while Zookned prepares an evening fire

Out of the corner of his eye, Bobby saw a big, beautiful rainbow that had appeared in the empty lot across the path. He stopped teetering and said, "look over there, Sue. Isn't that the most beautiful rainbow you've ever seen?" Sue turned to look, still raised in the air on the teeter totter, and agreed. Bobby then furrowed his brow and said, "wait a minute, we didn't have any rain and there aren't any clouds in the sky. Why is there a rainbow?"

The empty lot across the path

Before Sue could think of an answer, the rainbow had begun to pulse and the colors had begun to change. The silent sky was suddenly a bustle of noise caused by this curious rainbow. Bobby and Sue began to feel very scared. Rainbows are not supposed to pulse and change colors and they are definitely not supposed to make very loud noises! As the noise grew louder, the children called out for their father. "Daddy! Help!"

Zookned rushed over when he heard his children cry out.

Zookned rushed over when he heard his children cry out and looked up at the pulsing rainbow that they were looking at. "Look at the moving rainbow. Can you hear the noise it's making?" questioned Bobby. "Why is it doing that, Dad?" asked Sue. Zookned scratched his chin in confusion. He did not have an answer for them because he had never seen anything like this. Rainbows are only meant to follow the fall of rain, they remain a solid color and they certainly do not make any sort of racket like this one was.

The noise had grown so loud that both Grandma and Grandpa stopped what they were doing and ran outside.

The children's cries had grown louder as the clattering of the rainbow grew louder. The noise had grown so loud that both Grandma and Grandpa stopped what they were doing and ran outside. Grandma rushed to the scared children and held them, trying to sooth their fears. Grandpa stood next to Zookned, both observing the pulsing rainbow with no answers between them. The noise was a combination of what seemed to be many things, mostly clattering and clashing, but it now carried voices too - none of them were able to understand what was being said, but there were surely a collection of voices making their way down to the bottom of the rainbow in the empty lot which was now bathed in bright, colorful light and hard to see.

Unable to figure out what was going on, they all just watched the strange rainbow continue to pulse.

Unable to figure out what was going on, they all just watched the strange rainbow continue to pulse faster. Finally, the clattering and crashing and mix of voices began to quiet and it all seemed to culminate at the bottom of the rainbow. The empty lot was bathed in light, too bright to see but Zookned had a feeling that whatever all that racket was had now ended up in that empty lot.

The Gnomes From Woodland Grove, Part 1

Gnomes are mythical creatures and very family-oriented. When the mother of little Bobby and Sue passed away three years ago, Grandpa and Grandma Fern moved in to help raise the kids. It wasn't easy but with the family all together and love in their hearts, they survived.

Leeann "Grandma" Fern
Zane "Grandpa" Fern

It was hard work but as their mother always used to say, "even hard work can be fun with the right attitude." Bobby and Sue would sing and dance as they helped their grandparents clean the house and the yard. Of course Grandma and Grandpa joined in on the singing and dancing. Once the chores are done, Bobby and Sue are allowed to go outside and play on their teeter totter; their most favorite thing to do. Grandma's favorite thing to do is to sing songs with the children and teach them new ones while Grandpa's favorite thing to do is tell the kids stories - sometimes scary ones.

While their father is a very hard worker, providing for his family, he always makes time to play with his children. There is not a day that goes by that the Fern house is not full of singing voices, laughter and a good story. Zookned is like his father; he also likes to tell the children scary stories. Bobby and Sue enjoy even the scary stories and although they may have heard a particular story multiple times (sometimes Grandpa forgets he's already told a certain tale), they would act just as surprised or scared as the first time they heard it.

I have been shopping here since 2011 and I absolutely love this shop and the fact that it is a consignment shop makes it more unique. If I had more money to spend, I would shop here more often. Once again, the staff here is wonderful, helpful, knowledgeable; I seem to find stores with the nicest staff! Handmade bird houses, sold on consignment. I love them.

A small selection of animal garden decor.

Forgive the bit of blur but I really wanted to show the different styles of gnomes to choose from.

This is just a small corner displaying a fraction of the wind chimes and garden stakes.
